Advance Adapters and Cummins Partner on R2.8L Diesel Crate Engine Swaps

By: Moses Ludel

4×4 enthusiasts like diesel power! At the 4WD Mechanix Magazine forums, there is constant interest in diesel engine swaps. For several years now, the magazine and Advance Adapters have studied Jeep 4×4 diesel engine conversions. The biggest obstacle has been emissions. In places like California, the only legal swaps have involved smaller displacement diesel engines, typically from European passenger cars. Despite fuel efficiency gains, overall performance has been unimpressive.

Cummins diesel power has been a mainstay for Dodge Ram ¾-ton and 1-ton capacity trucks since the late 1980s. Unfortunately, these iconic 5.9L and 6.7L ISB engines cannot be retrofitted into a light-duty emissions category 4×4. The breakthrough is Cummins’ high-tech R2.8L four-cylinder engine approved for light-duty emissions. The crate engine and adapters will initially launch as a package for Jeep and other light 4x4s up to 1999-2000 (Tier 1) emissions. This could include Toyota 4WD pickups, FJ40 Land Cruiser, Land Rover, vintage Bronco and I-H Scout/Scout II.

A joint venture between Advance Adapters and the Cummins Repower program, the prototype package was a Jeep TJ Wrangler with an AX15 manual transmission. During 2017, the magazine will be installing a Cummins R2.8L diesel crate engine and adapter package into our 1999 Jeep XJ Cherokee, currently equipped with a 4.0L gasoline engine and AW4 automatic transmission. The project will become a step-by-step HD video feature at the magazine site and Advance Adapters’ website.

At the 2016 SEMA Show, 4WD Mechanix Magazine filmed an exclusive interview with Steve Roberts of Advance Adapters and Steve Sanders from Cummins Repower. See this interview for insights into this crate engine package, the Advance Adapters precision engine-to-transmission adapters and more.
