Autowerkz.TV on the Road: Top Film Crew Hauler – the 2017 Toyota Highlander

The Autowerkz.TV crew just finished a mega road trip that encompassed Hot August Nights, Concorso Italiano, racing at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca and a multitude of interviews. Being on the road with a camera crew, producers and on-air talent isn’t an adventure to be taken lightly.

Check out our Autowerkz.TV page (here).

Toyota was kind enough to loan us a 2017 Toyota Highlander for a support vehicle while we covered the action at Car Week in Monterey, CA. We worried that the Highlander was a mistake compared to the Sienna minivan we initially wanted; however, we needn’t have worried. In many ways, the 2017 Toyota Highlander was ideal for our needs.

We used its all-wheel drive system more than once, specifically when we shot near the beach. It never struggled on the sand. The four of us were driven in total comfort as our model had the rear captain’s chairs and a very quiet interior. The leather was plush and the interior assembly quality was top notch. We felt like we were in a Lexus.

Most importantly,  with max cargo space of 83.7 ft,³ (all-three rows folded) and our utilized space of 42.3 ft,³ we had enough room for several cameras, lights, tripods, sound equipment and more. We usually kept the third row folded flat, but could add a fifth passenger with some creative packing. Very utilitarian.

Regarding the V6, according to Toyota: 3.5-Liter V6 Double Overhead Cam (DOHC) 24-Valve direct-injection Atkinson-cycle-capable engine with VVT-iW (Variable Valve Timing-intelligent Wide) intake and VVT-i (Variable Valve Timing with intelligence) exhaust; 295 hp @ 6660 rpm, 263 lb.-ft. @ 4700 rpm. We averaged about 20 mpg as the traffic during Car Week was thick.

This power is connected an eight-speed automatic transmission which worked great but clunked a bit in traffic.

All in all, our days spent with the 2017 Toyota Highlander were excellent. It never looked out of place, no matter how highfalutin the location. We thank Toyota and look forward to driving a new Highlander in the near future.

Here are a few bits of social media that featured our ride!

Updates for the 2017 Concorso Italiano – taking place on Saturday, Aug 19th 2017

Once again, Autowerkz.TV will cover the 2017 Concorso Italiano. One of the largest gatherings of classic Italian automobiles, the Concorso Italiano is one of the gems of the Monterey Car Week. The event takes place on Saturday, August 19, 2017 at Black Horse Golf Course in Monterey Bay California.

This year is an exciting year for Lamborghini lovers around the world as we celebrate 50 years ago when Lamborghini introduced vertically opening doors for the first time on the Marzal prototype, star of many auto shows and driven by Prince Rainier of Monaco, with Princess Grace at his side, to open the Monte Carlo Grand Prix in 1967. Also, 30 years ago, in 1987, Lamborghini was purchased by Chrysler and Lamborghini began design of the 3.5 liter V12 engine for the French Formula 1 team Larrousse.

Roger Wiersema and Michael Palmieri, Co-Chief Judges for the Lamborghini Club America (LCA), coordinated by Andrew Romanowski, President of LCA, will lead the LCA judging effort with the support of an experienced and highly talented team of judges covering approximately five classes of vintages and types. LCA judging is open to all Lamborghinis and will be judged using the LCA judging instructions and scoring sheet available at the LCA website.

Winners are eligible to receive a beautiful LCA Award trophy and Concorso audience recognition as they drive across the Concorso stage to receive their award.  If you are not already registered for Concorso, please visit our website and register today.  After you have registered for Concorso, please let the LCA judges know if you plan to have your car judged at:  concoursjudging@lamborghiniclubamerica.com. There is no LCA judging registration fee but there will be a limit to the number of cars in each LCA judging class, so Lamborghini owners who want their cars judged at Concorso by LCA are strongly urged to let the LCA judges know so you are put on the top of the list and avoid being shut out. Registration will be at the LCA tent at Concorso on Saturday August 19th, between 9:00am and 9:30am.

Endurance Rally Association’s inaugural Baltic Classic Rally Begins in Two Days

The Endurance Rally Association’s inaugural Baltic Classic Rally will see over 70 crews flagged away from the start line in Copenhagen on Sunday 28 May, competing in vehicles which represent over fifty years of motoring heritage. As befits an ERA event, the views are set to be stunning, the competitors varied, and the hotels second to none.

Entrants range from a brace of 1925 Bentleys to a 1978 Opel Kadett Coupe, with models chosen from rallying favourites like the Volvo Amazon and Ford Escort through to exotic Aston Martin DB5s and pre-war Lagondas.

Crews to watch out for include experienced rally goers Bill Cleyndert and Jacqui Norman in the Bentley Super Sport, winners of the inaugural European Cup on the Peking to Paris 2016, Jim Grayson and Simon Spinks in the 1969 London to Mexico Ford Escort, and Ludovic Bois and Julia Colman in the Volvo Amazon of the same year, all ‘P2P’ alumni.

Starting from Copenhagen’s Clarion Hotel, the route will head through Sweden, Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland before finishing in Berlin on Saturday 10 June, covering over 4,200 kilometres in 14 days.

Highlights include a drive across the Oresund Bridge – the longest road and rail bridge in Europe, a visit to the SAAB museum in Trollhattan, and a sumptuous ferry across the striking Stockholm Archipelago. With almost no darkness, the views are exquisite even in the small hours.

Other attractions for entrants include the Riga Motor Museum, newly reopened with phenomenal vehicles in Latvia. Circuit and rallycross tests join experiences on Finnish gravel roads such as Ouninpohja and Ruuhamaki, and a long regularity event on a former Soviet airfield. On the last morning, the city of Szczecin plays host to a special mystery test, before the finish at the Brandenburg gate in Berlin.

ERA Rally Director Fred Gallagher said: “This is a new adventure for us, with a fantastic entry list, and we think this is going to be one of the highlights in the Endurance Rally Association calendar for years to come. While we have explored some of the territory covered before in an early outing of the Peking to Paris, there is a lot of exciting new territory which we’re keen to share with our competitors.”

To follow the Baltic Classic as well as for more information on other ERA events including the 2018 Road to Saigon and Trans-America Challenge with entries still available, visit www.endurorally.com.
