DRE Enduro Academy, the Ducati off-road riding school, returns for 2017

  • Learn and improve safe off-road riding skills whatever the terrain on the Multistrada 1200 Enduro and Multistrada 950
  • A program full of new aspects giving a unique experience that can also be enjoyed with friends and family

Borgo Panigale, Bologna (Italy), 17 May 2017 – DRE Enduro Academy, Ducati riding school dedicated to off-road riding, returns for 2017. With courses created to let participants learn to handle any type of road and terrain in complete safety, the Ducati Riding Experience (DRE) Enduro Academy helps students learn or improve the proper riding techniques and skills needed to deal with off-road routes under poor grip conditions, thereby increasing their experience and sensitivity translating into safer riding on asphalt.

The new edition of the DRE Enduro Academy will take place over 8 dates. For the first time this year the Multistrada 950 will join the fleet of Multistrada 1200 Enduro bikes. The new Multistrada 950 will give the participants a chance to try this smaller, more accessible and versatile bike.

The DRE Enduro Academy courses take place under the leadership of experienced riders and qualified instructors led by ex-Dakar rally rider Beppe Gualini, the technical director of the event. The DRE Enduro Academy courses are designed for everyone, from novices who want to increase their confidence and bike control, to expert off-roaders who want to learn from the experience of the best riders. Participants follow exercises to practice the right techniques for overcoming obstacles, emergency braking on poor grip surfaces and learn how to handle the weight of the body on uneven road surfaces like the “washboard” terrain typical of sandy deserts.

All the bikes supplied to the DRE Enduro Academy participants are equipped with Ducati Performance components for more extreme use, from the Ducati Performance bull bars by Touratech, to Pirelli Scorpion Rally tyres as well as type-approved Termignoni silencers and more.

All the participants of the DRE Enduro Academy can hire an entire set of technical clothing, in collaboration with Arai, Scott, UFO, Spidi and TCX. Technogym is again partner of the DRE Enduro Academy, supporting the physical preparation to react better while riding.

The course will be held in the prestigious Nipozzano Castle and its surrounding lands. In this splendid setting all DRE Enduro Academy participants will also enjoy tasting the best traditional Tuscan dishes and typical wines produced on the estate.

The DRE Enduro Academy also welcomes friends and family, who can choose to spend the day exploring the historic village of Nipozzano, visiting the wine cellars and enjoying the panoramas thanks to excursions in the Tuscan hills. Alternatively, they can reach riders in the off-road training areas with the new Volkswagen Amarok.

The Volkswagen up! GTI goes from Concept to Reality

World premiere of a new GTI: First up! GTI¹ is a tribute to the original GTI

  • DNA of an icon: the concept of the 115 PS up! GTI follows the genetic heritage of the first Golf GTI (110 PS)
  • Festival highlight: world premiere of the up! GTI concept car at the legendary GTI Meet at Lake Wörthersee (24 to 27 May)
  • The production version of the 197 km/h up! GTI will be launched into the market early next year

Wolfsburg – A circle closes 41 years after the debut of the first Golf GTI: at this year’s GTI Meet at Lake Wörthersee (24 to 27 May), Volkswagen is presenting a compact, sporty car very much in the spirit of the original GTI

  • the new up! GTI. The concept and power output of the 85 kW / 115 PS up! are broadly in line with the Golf GTI MkI presented in 1976 that had 81 kW / 110 PS. The near-production concept car pays tribute to this icon
  • with compact dimensions, a low weight, a powerful engine, sports running gear and the typical insignia of a GTI (including red stripes in the radiator grille, seat covers in “clark” tartan pattern). This sporty small car will certainly bring a new dimension of driving fun to the compact A typical GTI feature is the sophisticated sports running gear. It gives the car the agility akin to that of a go-kart, yet it also offers a high level of comfort. The production version of the up! GTI will be launched into the market in early 2018.

With the up! GTI, Volkswagen is building a bridge that spans four decades: when the first GTI was launched in the 1970s it democratised access to fast roads around the world – especially the overtaking lane of German motorways. Where large saloons and expensive sports cars had previously set the pace, the new compact Volkswagen suddenly stirred up the field. The red stripe in the radiator grille, the black double stripes across the side sills and behind, the black stripe on the tailgate immediately identified this Volkswagen as a GTI. Its 110 PS powered a kerb weight of just 810 kg and accelerated it to 100 km/h in 9.0 seconds. Top speed: 182 km/h. The colours for the market launch: “mars red” and “diamond silver”. Later, white and black also became established as GTI colours.

The new up! GTI continues the creed of the lightweight and no-frills sports car with a compact format – from outside and inside similar in size to the original GTI. It is driven by a turbocharged engine (TSI) with powerful 230 Nm torque. The key data do indeed read like a Golf GTI MkI catapulted into the present day. Weight: 997 kg (significantly high-strength steels and more airbags). Vmax: 197 km/h. 0-100 km/h: 8.8 seconds. Colours: classic once again and typical of the GTI – the plain colours “tornado red” and “pure white” and the metallic colours “dark silver”, “black pearl” and – as a new GTI colour – “costa azul” (blue).

  • The City Concours takes place from 8-9 June, with tickets and hospitality on sale now from

Toyota Land Speed Cruiser hits 230.02 MPH on a Record Run Driven by Carl Edwards

Can you believe a Toyota Land Cruiser “Toyota Land Speed Cruiser” hit 230.02 MPH? This story debuted a week back, but we just got our hands on their video. Pretty oddball stuff, especially considering it comes from one of the most conservative brands – Toyota.

Torrance, Calif., May 5, 2017— Land Cruiser, Toyota’s iconic go-anywhere four-wheel-drive sport-utility vehicle, has earned myriad accolades and records over the 60-plus years it’s been in production. And now, among them: the title of “World’s Fastest SUV” thanks to a record speed of over 230 mph, attained by the custom 2,000-horsepower Land Speed Cruiser.

With former Toyota NASCAR driver Carl Edwards at the helm, the understated Land Speed Cruiser shattered the previous “World’s Fastest SUV” record by more than 19 mph, reaching a GPS-verified and video-documented 230.02 mph before running out of usable pavement. With enough track ahead, the Land Speed Cruiser could be expected to go even faster.

“At Toyota, we like to say ‘Let’s Go Places,’ and the Land Speed Cruiser goes places faster than any SUV before it. This was an aspirational goal that inspired us all,” said Steve Appelbaum, Toyota Motor Sales national engagement marketing manager. “We achieved success by employing the kind of innovative solutions and unyielding determination that have long represented the core of Toyota’s soul.”

The Land Speed Cruiser, which debuted at the 2016 Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) Show, started life as a stock production model before being heavily modified by a team of engineers at Toyota’s Motorsports Technical Center (MTC).

“The World’s Fastest SUV record was at 211 mph. That’s extremely fast. Toyota thought, ‘Why don’t we make a really, ultra-powerful Land Cruiser, and let’s just see how fast we can make it can go,’” said MTC Manager, Chuck Wade.

Using the Land Cruiser’s production 5.7-liter 3UR-FE V8 engine as a starting point, the team added a pair of volleyball-sized Garrett turbochargers that are capable of producing up to 55 PSI of boost. To cope with extreme force induction, the MTC team upgraded the engine’s internals with sturdier pistons and rods and a custom-made intake manifold, among other key items. This helped ensure the monstrous V8 could safely and reliably produce over 2,000 horsepower for its record-setting runs. The role of doling power was left to a custom racing transmission strong enough to withstand the stresses and abuses of high power and tremendous speeds.

However, building the engine was the easy part. Driving in excess of 200 mph challenges a vehicle’s aerodynamics and stability. To aid controllability, the Land Speed Cruiser sits lower to the pavement, thus dramatically reducing the amount of turbulent air allowed to pass underneath. Its frame received some massaging in order to maintain optimal suspension geometry, and was narrowed by 3 inches to accommodate wider Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires.

Test driver and championship road racer Craig Stanton played a key role in fine tuning the Land Speed Cruiser’s setup at Toyota’s Arizona Proving Ground (TAPG). His input was translated into tactile changes made by MTC’s engineers.

“I wanted the Land Speed Cruiser to provide the confidence you need, as a driver, to keep pushing even when the world around you becomes a high speed blur,” he said. “We made some setup adjustments, and it not only accelerates and shifts more smoothly, but it also has enhanced stability.”

With the Land Speed Cruiser dialed in and finally ready for its record-setting run, recently retired Toyota NASCAR driver Carl Edwards met the team at Mojave Air and Space Port in Mojave, California. In addition to being one of the very few places in the U.S. where supersonic flight is allowed, it features a two-and-a-half-mile paved runway perfectly suited to the Land Speed Cruiser’s mission.

Prior to Edwards’ run, Stanton warmed up the SUV, moving it along at a hefty 198 mph. On his first run, Edwards was able to hit an awe-inspiring 211 mph, but found himself running out of pavement to slow the big SUV. More boost was then dialed in to up the power, and he tried again.

The next run proved to be the most impressive. Edwards put the hammer down, and piloted the Land Speed Cruiser to its jaw-dropping 230 mph record.

“At 225 mph, the thing was wandering a little bit. All I could think was that Craig said, ‘No matter what, just keep your foot in it,’ and we got 230 mph,” Edwards recounted from behind a huge grin after setting the record. “It’s safe to say that this is the fastest SUV on the planet.”

London City Concours update: ’88 and ’98 winners of Le Mans – the Porsche 911 GT1 Straßenversion and the Jaguar XJR-15 will attend

Some of the most extreme roadgoing cars ever produced have joined the line-up for the new City Concours
The Jaguar XJR-15 – essentially a roadgoing version of the Jaguar XJR-9 that won Le Mans in 1988 – is confirmed to attend

  • Also starring is the Porsche 911 GT1 Straßenversion, derived from the 1998 Le Mans 24 Hours winner
  • More than 110 cars will be on display, ranging from supercars of the ‘80s to pre-war rarities
  • The City Concours will be held at the Honourable Artillery Company headquarters from 8-9 June
  • Tickets and hospitality packages are on sale now from
  • The new London City Concours will bring together some of the most extreme and focused cars ever to hit the road – those directly derived from Le Mans-winning racers.

Chief among them is the Jaguar XJR-15, which was developed from the XJR-9 racing car that won the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1988.

Featuring a carbon fibre tub and a 450hp 6.0-litre naturally-aspirated V12 engine bolted directly to it, the changes compared to the Le Mans champion are minimal. The Jaguar XJR-9’s suspension was transferred almost exactly into the XJR-15, featuring state-of-the-art fabricated wishbones and horizontal pushrod-spring dampers at the front.

The stripped down road car features a cabin finished in bare carbon fibre, complete with deep bucket seats and harnesses – altogether, the XJR-15 weighs just 1050kg.

But its focus on performance rather than comfort pays off; the XJR-15 is capable of hitting 215mph and can accelerate to 60mph in less than four seconds. A great deal of that straight-line performance can be attributed to the car’s beautiful aerodynamic body, which was penned by Peter Stevens, also responsible for the McLaren F1.

Another Le Mans champion-derived roadcar, the Porsche 911 GT1 Straßenversion, or ‘Street Version’ will also be at the City Concours. In order to race, 25 cars were homologated for the road, with a body almost identical to the racing version that won at Le Mans in 1998, but an interior featuring a few creature comforts like a cassette player and air-conditioning.

Underneath the carbon fibre bodyshell is a 3.2-litre flat-six twin-turbocharged engine with 550hp and slightly softer independent double wishbone suspension compared with the racing car. With such a limited production run, the GT1 remains one of the rarest Porsches ever made.

Both of these incredible Le Mans-winning racers for the road will sit among more than 150 of the rarest cars in the world at the City Concours, from 8-9 June. The event takes place in the Honourable Artillery Company grounds, near to the Barbican and Bank.

Andrew Evans, City Concours Director, said: “These two cars are rarely ever seen in public, let alone together, and they’re just two of more than 110 motoring rarities set for the City Concours. For our visitors it’s a day of pure motoring indulgence, and we’ll also have the very best food, champagne, art and watches available in the Artillery Company grounds too.”

Tickets to the City Concours are available now from Hospitality, including breakfast and lunch packages, are available from Rachel Roullier ( 07826 907 121).
