Finally: An Über Badass BMW X5

 

Have you ever seen an E70 BMW X5 look this cool? Thanks to designer, Kasim Tlibekov, we have this macho BMW X5 to drool over. While you may not look to BMW for serious off-road vehicles; remember: BMW AG built several of the top performing (and winning) vehicles for the Dakar rally.

Now, if it had a X5M powerplant, we’d be talking turkey!

Is the CT and T Amphibious Electric Car For Real?

After looking all over the internet for any new information on the CT&T Multiple Amphibious Vehicle, there has been nothing new for several years. That’s a shame because the Korean electric automaker (CT&T) showed a promising concept, that looked production ready, at the 2010 Detroit Auto Show.

Had it been built, the CT&T Multiple Amphibious Vehicle would have had a range of 70 miles, a top speed of around 40 mph on land and about 10 mph on the water.

CT& T is still in the electric automotive business, but they build electric delivery vehicles and golf carts.

 

 

The Overcomer Hunta is All Sorts of Awesome

The Overcomer Hunta is an all-terrain amphibious vehicle that’s engineered around soft,  massive tires that give it buoyancy, incredible traction and a wide footprint on all terrain.Equipped with a 95 horsepower diesel engine, the Overcomer Hunta can be fitted with a gas engine as an option.

The vehicle is built in Belarus. Designed by a MAZ/MAN joint venture.

Details are scarce, but we do know that the Overcomer Hunta was tested in the most extreme environments.

 

Other details:

  • It can hold up to eight passengers
  • Top speed is 70 kmph
  • The body is fiberglass
  • Maximum gross weight is about 3.3 tons and can carry a maximum 700 kilograms on water and 1 ton on road.
  • It comes with a 100 liter fuel tank with provisions to add a second tank that holds 95 liters

Check out the Drop-Dead-Gorgeous Electric Fisker Emotion

 

There isn’t a ton of information available on the upcoming Fisker Emotion; however, these stunning images recently hit the net, how could we resist posting these? Henrik Fisker is a design genius and, we all agreed, he knocked this exterior out of the park. We wish we had more information.

Here are a few things we know (According to Fisker):

  • The Fisker Emotion is all-electric
  • It will have up to a 400 mile range
  • Top speed is 161 mph
  • Prices start at about $130,000
  • The Fisker Emotion is slated to go into production in 2019

If Henrik Fisker is able to pull this vehicle off, he will be competing directly against Elon Musk. There’s nothing as good for the automotive consumer as competitive automakers.

The BMW Brilliance Automotive Joint Venture adds a North Section of its Automotive Plant in Dadong Shenyang, China

Munich/Shenyang. BMW Brilliance Automotive (BBA) today opened the newly-built north section of its automotive plant in Dadong/Shenyang, China. The first long-wheelbase version of the new BMW 5 Series Sedan rolled off the production line during the opening ceremony. The northern extension comprises all production areas of a full plant and boasts a highly-advanced production system with the latest sustainability standards. With its two production locations in Dadong and Tiexi, BBA will have a total annual capacity of up to 450,000 units.

“The Dadong plant demonstrates the success of our joint venture and the BMW 5 Series in China. The extension of the northern section underlines our clear commitment to the Chinese market. BBA has invested a total of one billion euros in the expansion of its Dadong production location over the past three years. The locally-produced BMW 5 Series has been an unmitigated success: It was the top-selling vehicle in the premium segment in China in 2016 and we expect it to remain the leader in its segment,” remarked Dr. Nicolas Peter, member of the Board of Management of BMW AG responsible for Finance, at the opening ceremony in China.

“Our production in China is well prepared for further market growth. The new north section is the result of the latest technologies and comprehensive knowledge of the BMW production system,” added Oliver Zipse, member of the Board of Management of BMW AG, responsible for Production. “We will continue to invest in our highly innovative production sites in China. Our next project is already underway: the remodelling of the southern section of Plant Dadong. Once finished, it will give us even greater flexibility and more potential for growth.”

The opening ceremony was attended by Dr. Nicolas Peter, member of the Board of Management of BMW AG, Finance; Oliver Zipse, member of the Board of Management of BMW AG, Production; Olaf Kastner, President and CEO BMW Group Region China; Yumin Qi, Chairman, Brilliance Automotive Group Holdings Co., Ltd.; Xiaoan Wu, Chairman, BMW Brilliance Automotive Ltd.; Dr. Johann Wieland, President and CEO BMW Brilliance Automotive, China, and local government representatives.

Highly-advanced technology and new sustainability standards

The large-scale expansion of BBA Plant Dadong involves all key technologies – including press plant, body shop, paint shop and assembly – and utilises highly-advanced equipment and the latest in process digitalisation. Using 3D computer simulation, for example, the direct-drive servo press installed in the press plant can process aluminum to an extremely high quality standard. Optical laser scanners then measure the body and verify quality in a matter of seconds.

Another example of Industry 4.0 applications can be found in the networked production system: using the vehicle identification number, the individual components, operations and machines of every BMW 5 Series built in Dadong can be traced. This internet-of-things architecture, combined with automated data analysis, results in greater transparency and higher quality overall. New machines, processes and products can also be integrated faster into ongoing production.

To reduce the workload for production employees, BBA is using innovative exoskeletons worn directly on the body. Like a second skeleton, this structure provides external support for the body and reduces the effort required for physically demanding tasks. Mobile smart devices such as tablets provide employees with precisely the information they need.

A holistic approach, innovative technologies and highly-advanced processes have enabled especially sustainable and environmentally-friendly production in the new section of the plant. Most notably, the paint shop uses 60% less energy and water than it did ten years ago. Wastewater has also been reduced by 50% and volatile organic compounds by no less than 80%. The direct-drive servo press also helps the plant meet its sustainability targets. It uses 44% less energy than a hydraulic press, with a noise reduction of 12 decibels.

Overall, the new northern section will use 30% less energy compared with the production of the previous BMW 5 Series.

BBA President Dr. Johann Wieland emphasized, “BMW Brilliance is recognised as one of the most visionary and successful premium auto makers in China. We are a leading employer, a major contributor to the local economy and a reliable corporate partner.”

The Shenyang production location

The Shenyang location, which comprises the Tiexi and Dadong automotive plants and the engine plant including light-metal foundry, plays an important role in the BMW Group’s global production network. It contributes to the strategy of globally balanced growth, which includes installing production capacity in the respective regional markets.

BBA’s two automotive plants, Tiexi and Dadong, already produce five BMW models. With the expansion of its northern section, the Dadong plant will also have room for a sixth model, the new BMW X3.

BBA production in Shenyang builds vehicles exclusively for the Chinese market. The Dadong plant in the northeast of the city started production in 2004 and produces today the BMW 5 Series Long-Wheelbase Version. The Tiexi plant in the west of Shenyang went on-stream in 2012 and builds the BMW X1 Long-Wheelbase Version (including a plugin-hybrid version), the BMW 1 Series Sedan, the BMW 2 Series Tourer, the BMW 3 Series Long-Wheelbase Version and the BMW 3 Series Sedan.

A key component of the Shenyang location is the engine plant with light-metal foundry – the BMW Group’s only engine production facility outside Europe. The engine plant supplies the two vehicle production sites in Dadong and Tiexi with drive units for locally-produced BMW automobiles. A new high-voltage battery centre, which will assemble high-voltage batteries for plug-in hybrid vehicles, is currently under construction.

China – the largest BMW Group market

In the first four months of 2017, China remained the largest single market for the BMW Group, with a total of 191,697 vehicles sold (+18.2 %). Following the market launch of the BMW 1 Series Sedan, the ramp-up of the new BMW 5 Series Long-Wheelbase Version promises to generate further sales momentum in the second half of the year. 2016 was the first time ever more than half a million BMWs and MINIs were sold in a single year in China (516,355 units, +11.3 %). The BMW Group Chinese sales network comprises more than 470 dealerships.

The BMW Brilliance Automotive joint venture

The BMW Brilliance Automotive joint venture was founded in 2003 and encompasses production and sales of BMW automobiles in China, as well as local development tasks. The joint venture employs more than 16,000 people, while its supplier network comprises around 350 local suppliers.

In 2014, the BMW Group and Brilliance China Automotive Holdings Limited extended the contract for their Chinese joint venture early – four years before the current contract expired – thus laying the foundation to deepen further this successful cooperation. The extended contract is valid for ten years (from 2018 to 2028).

Toyota Land Speed Cruiser hits 230.02 MPH on a Record Run Driven by Carl Edwards

 

Can you believe a Toyota Land Cruiser “Toyota Land Speed Cruiser” hit 230.02 MPH? This story debuted a week back, but we just got our hands on their video. Pretty oddball stuff, especially considering it comes from one of the most conservative brands – Toyota.

Torrance, Calif., May 5, 2017— Land Cruiser, Toyota’s iconic go-anywhere four-wheel-drive sport-utility vehicle, has earned myriad accolades and records over the 60-plus years it’s been in production. And now, among them: the title of “World’s Fastest SUV” thanks to a record speed of over 230 mph, attained by the custom 2,000-horsepower Land Speed Cruiser.

With former Toyota NASCAR driver Carl Edwards at the helm, the understated Land Speed Cruiser shattered the previous “World’s Fastest SUV” record by more than 19 mph, reaching a GPS-verified and video-documented 230.02 mph before running out of usable pavement. With enough track ahead, the Land Speed Cruiser could be expected to go even faster.

“At Toyota, we like to say ‘Let’s Go Places,’ and the Land Speed Cruiser goes places faster than any SUV before it. This was an aspirational goal that inspired us all,” said Steve Appelbaum, Toyota Motor Sales national engagement marketing manager. “We achieved success by employing the kind of innovative solutions and unyielding determination that have long represented the core of Toyota’s soul.”

The Land Speed Cruiser, which debuted at the 2016 Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) Show, started life as a stock production model before being heavily modified by a team of engineers at Toyota’s Motorsports Technical Center (MTC).

“The World’s Fastest SUV record was at 211 mph. That’s extremely fast. Toyota thought, ‘Why don’t we make a really, ultra-powerful Land Cruiser, and let’s just see how fast we can make it can go,’” said MTC Manager, Chuck Wade.

Using the Land Cruiser’s production 5.7-liter 3UR-FE V8 engine as a starting point, the team added a pair of volleyball-sized Garrett turbochargers that are capable of producing up to 55 PSI of boost. To cope with extreme force induction, the MTC team upgraded the engine’s internals with sturdier pistons and rods and a custom-made intake manifold, among other key items. This helped ensure the monstrous V8 could safely and reliably produce over 2,000 horsepower for its record-setting runs. The role of doling power was left to a custom racing transmission strong enough to withstand the stresses and abuses of high power and tremendous speeds.

However, building the engine was the easy part. Driving in excess of 200 mph challenges a vehicle’s aerodynamics and stability. To aid controllability, the Land Speed Cruiser sits lower to the pavement, thus dramatically reducing the amount of turbulent air allowed to pass underneath. Its frame received some massaging in order to maintain optimal suspension geometry, and was narrowed by 3 inches to accommodate wider Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires.

Test driver and championship road racer Craig Stanton played a key role in fine tuning the Land Speed Cruiser’s setup at Toyota’s Arizona Proving Ground (TAPG). His input was translated into tactile changes made by MTC’s engineers.

“I wanted the Land Speed Cruiser to provide the confidence you need, as a driver, to keep pushing even when the world around you becomes a high speed blur,” he said. “We made some setup adjustments, and it not only accelerates and shifts more smoothly, but it also has enhanced stability.”

With the Land Speed Cruiser dialed in and finally ready for its record-setting run, recently retired Toyota NASCAR driver Carl Edwards met the team at Mojave Air and Space Port in Mojave, California. In addition to being one of the very few places in the U.S. where supersonic flight is allowed, it features a two-and-a-half-mile paved runway perfectly suited to the Land Speed Cruiser’s mission.

Prior to Edwards’ run, Stanton warmed up the SUV, moving it along at a hefty 198 mph. On his first run, Edwards was able to hit an awe-inspiring 211 mph, but found himself running out of pavement to slow the big SUV. More boost was then dialed in to up the power, and he tried again.

The next run proved to be the most impressive. Edwards put the hammer down, and piloted the Land Speed Cruiser to its jaw-dropping 230 mph record.

“At 225 mph, the thing was wandering a little bit. All I could think was that Craig said, ‘No matter what, just keep your foot in it,’ and we got 230 mph,” Edwards recounted from behind a huge grin after setting the record. “It’s safe to say that this is the fastest SUV on the planet.”
